Sukkot Sukka in ebraico significa capanna.
In questi giorni si celebra "sukkot", la festa delle capanne, per ricordare alle nuove generazioni dei quarant'anni di permanenza degli ebrei passati nel deserto dopo la liberazione dall'Egitto. E' la terza festa ebraica del mese di Tishrei, ed una delle più importanti ricorrenze dell'ebraismo. Sukkot dura 7 giorni, dal 15 al 21 del mese ebraico di Tishrei.
 
Uno dei precetti fondamentali della festa è l'utilizzo di quattro tipi di piante nelle benedizioni rituali, in ogni giorno della festività: foglie di palma, salice, mirto e cedro. La palma è senza profumo ma il suo frutto è saporito, il salice non ha nè sapore nè profumo, il mirto ha profumo ma non ha sapore e il cedro ha sapore e profumo. Le quattro specie rappresentano la varietà delle caratteristiche presenti in natura e nell'uomo e le relative qualità, per le quali si deve ringraziare Dio.
